Germany said Wednesday that it plans “to continue its close cooperation” with the US despite the midterm election results, which dealt a major setback to President Donald Trump.
“The USA is—and will remain—an important partner and ally for us. We will continue our close cooperation with the USA, even if a different constellation were to emerge in both chambers,” deputy government spokesman Steffen Meyer told a news briefing in Berlin.
Asked whether he expected any changes in US foreign policy on issues such as the Iran war, Ukraine and tariffs, Meyer said he did “not want to speculate,” citing the ongoing vote count in the US midterm elections.
Trump and his Republican Party suffered a major defeat in Tuesday’s midterm elections, with Democrats projected by major US media outlets to regain control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
