China pledges to continue to support Security Council 'maintaining world peace and security'

Beijing will "continue to support the Security Council in fulfilling its primary responsibility for maintaining world peace and security," Chinese Vice President Han Zheng told UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

He said the current international situation is "fraught with turmoil and the international system with the United Nations at its core facing multiple challenges," according to state-run news agency Xinhua.

Han said China would support the UN in addressing major challenges, including climate change, and in developing global governance frameworks for emerging areas such as artificial intelligence.

Guterres said the UN is ready to deepen cooperation with China, improve global governance, promote a multipolar world, and safeguard the common interests of the international community.
