Iranian serviceman killed in recent US attacks

An Iranian Navy serviceman was killed in recent US attacks in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, Iranian state media reported Thursday.

The state-run IRNA news agency identified the serviceman as Amirhossein Salimzadeh.

He was killed while on duty during US attacks in Khuzestan on Sept. 1, it said.

At least 18 people were killed and 142 others injured in recent US airstrikes, Iranian Health Ministry spokesman Hossein Kermanpour said Thursday.

Kermanpour said the casualties were recorded between the evenings of Aug. 30 and Sept. 2.

The reported fatalities include four people killed in Sirik, seven in Khuzestan, four members of the IRGC Aerospace Force in Kermanshah and three Basij members on Lavan Island, while at least 50 people were reportedly wounded at a wedding gathering in Sirik.

The latest escalation began after a US strike on Larak Island on Sunday ended a month-long lull in regional hostilities.

Washington said US forces targeted two Iranian launchers after observing preparations to deploy rockets carrying sea mines.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) retaliated by attacking US military facilities in neighboring countries, including Kuwait, the UAE, Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq.

US Central Command subsequently launched fresh airstrikes against IRGC targets inside Iran late Tuesday.

The renewed fighting follows the breakdown of a June 18 memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Clashes resumed in July amid disagreements over its implementation.
