Hull City extend head coach Sergej Jakirovic’s contract

Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic has signed a new two-year contract, the English Premier League club announced on Friday.

The agreement will keep the 49-year-old at MKM Stadium until the summer of 2028, and includes an option to extend his stay through the end of the 2028-29 season.

Jakirovic was appointed in June 2025 after Hull narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship the previous season. He then led the Tigers to Premier League promotion during his first campaign in English football.

He averaged 1.58 points per game as the Tigers secured a Championship playoff spot on the final day of the regular season with a 2-1 victory against Norwich City.

Hull overcame Millwall in the semifinals before defeating Middlesbrough in the playoff final at Wembley, recording three consecutive clean sheets during their promotion run.

Jakirovic became the third Hull City manager to guide the club to the Premier League through the playoffs.

The Tigers have also made a strong start to their first Premier League campaign since the 2016-17 season, beating Manchester United 2-0 at home before recording a 1-0 victory against Coventry City on matchday two.

“I have felt the support from the club and our fans from the minute I arrived, so I am delighted that this journey will continue. Hull feels like my home, and I’m excited for this journey to continue,” said Jakirovic. “Promotion to the Premier League is a dream come true. You have to believe in your work, and we have a special group here who are sticking together as a family.”

Hull City Chairman Acun Ilicali described Jakirovic as the “perfect coach” for the club’s vision.

“Everyone at the club believes that Sergej is a high-quality coach and it is a big privilege to have him here,” said the Turkish businessman. “This is a special day for us, and we look forward to our journey continuing together in the Premier League.”
