Flights canceled as UK faces air traffic control failure for 2nd time this month

Flights were disrupted Monday across the UK because of a technical issue, marking the second time this month that passengers have been affected by an air traffic control problem.

Flights in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England were disrupted by another “technical issue” with air traffic control after a similar problem earlier this month forced thousands of flights to be canceled across the country.

The National Air Traffic Services (NATS), Britain's air traffic control service provider, said it experienced a technical issue at its Prestwick center in Scotland.

"The issue has now been fixed and we are working closely with airports and airlines to safely remove the remaining air traffic restrictions as quickly as possible to minimise any further disruption," it said in a post on US social media platform X.

The NATS noted that this was a "connectivity issue" with part of the provider's systems network, specific to the operation in Scotland.

"It is nothing to do with the problem we had earlier this month," it added.

On Sept. 8-9, thousands of flights across the country were canceled after what was called a "technical issue."

Later, the Financial Times reported that it was caused by a military aircraft entering "spurious" flight data.
